Later, in eighth grade ,Murray started on the tenor sax, playing in the junior- high jazz band ,and at weekend gigs ,with his Dad 's band . During this time Murray was invited to perform on PBS television local station in Philly ,WUHY ,with his fellow thriteen year old Jazz band members ,of his quartet .

After many years of playing jazz "by ear", Murray, then sixteen years old ,became a student of the jazz pianist Jimmy Amadie ,who lovingly inspired Murray to become an expressive tenorSax player ,like the great "Prez", Lester Young. Jimmy taught the fundamentals of chords , progressions , and stressed that "simplicity is the sole essence of beauty". At the Philadelphia Musical Academy(which later became the University of the Arts ), Murray was fortunate to be excepted as a classical clarinet student of the respected Donald Montanaro, from the Philadelphia Orchestra. Murray also studied classical sax with Marshall Taylor at PMA and with jazz saxophonist Vince Trombetta,Jr from the Mike Douglas Show .
