Section 1 the First World War
It was to be the war to end all wars, and it began at 11:15 on the morning of June 28, 1914, in an outpost of the Austro-Hungarian Empire called Sarajevo. It would end officially almost five years later. Unofficially, it has never ended: the horrors we live with today were born in the First World War.
It left millions-civilians and soldiers-maimed or dead. And it left us with new technologies of death: tanks, planes, and submarines; reliable rapid-fire machine guns and field artillery; poison gas and chemical warfare. It introduced us to U-boat packs and strategic bombing, to unrestricted war on civilians and mistreatment of prisoners. Most of all, it changed our world. In its wake, empires toppled, monarchies fell, whole populations lost their national identities as political systems, and geographic boundaries were realigned. Instabilities were institutionalized, enmities enshrined. And the social order shifted seismically. Manners, mores, codes of behavior; literature and the arts; education and class distinctions-all underwent a vast sea change. And in all these ways, the twentieth century can be said to have been born on the morning of June 28, 1914.
"One of the first books that anyone should read in beginning to try to understand this war and this century."
Section 2 the World War two
On the morning of August 9 1945, air rate sirens rang out in the Japanese city of Nagasaki. However, a short time later, the sirens rounds again, indicating there was no danger and people began to climb out of their shelters to carry on about their day business. Japanese spotters had only identified two United States Army Air Force B 29 bombers and they had previously flown to the city of Kakura without dropping any weapons, so Japanese authorities assumed it was merely a reconnaissance mission.
They couldn't have known what was coming for them just as the people of Kakura couldn't have known. They had been spared an awful fate that morning thanks to something as simple as clouds obscuring their city at 1101 hours a single bomb was dropped into the city's industrial area, the bomb destinated, with an equivalent force of 22000 sticks of TNT Which resulted in a blast so bright it was seen by observers over 100 feet away.
This book covers the entire war - on land, at sea, and in the air - and provides new coverage of the brutal island fighting in the Pacific, the bomber war over Europe, the liberation of the death camps, and the contributions of African Americans and other minorities. He concludes with a suspenseful, never-before-told story of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki, based on interviews with the men who flew the mission that ended the war.
