Requirements
This course is intended to be a companion course to accompany the HEC-ResSim Lessons course. Rather than cover each topic one at a time, these exercises provide full working examples of building and running a working reservoir model from scratch, which will combine a number of the topics covered in the HEC-ResSim Lessons videos.

** All videos are downloadable ** Put your HEC-ResSim knowledge into practice with this hands-on exercise series, designed to complement and extend the concepts covered in the HEC-ResSim Lessons course. In this companion course, you'll move beyond individual topics and work through complete operational scenarios that bring together multiple tools and rule types into fully functioning reservoir system models. Each exercise focuses on applying core concepts in a practical workflow-building, running, and interpreting simulations that reflect real-world reservoir operations.You'll implement downstream control and release function rules, develop guide curves for seasonal operations, and explore how prescribed releases, modifiers, and tandem rules can shape system behavior. Exercises also cover advanced allocation and prioritization strategies, gate operations, hydropower generation, and pump scheduling. As you progress, you'll learn how to extend your models with state variables, scripted rules, and conditional logic using IF blocks, enabling you to capture more complex operational decision-making.Beyond rule development, you'll practice with specialized tools such as storage credit, capacity outage schedules, and reservoir decision schedules to simulate real-world management constraints. The course also introduces system-wide performance analysis methods, including yield analysis, ensemble computing, and Monte Carlo simulations, helping you evaluate reliability, uncertainty, and tradeoffs in reservoir operation strategies.As with the lessons course, you'll use ResSim's visualization and reporting features to analyze results, but these exercises emphasize integration, problem-solving, and practical application across multiple scenarios.
