Описание (description): Мэтью Касберт – здешний фермер, чудаковатый старикан с седой бородой и навязчивым страхом ко всему женскому полу. Единственная женщина, перед которой он не робеет и не вытирает огромной пятернёй взмокший лоб, это его сестра Марилла. Вместе они ведут тихое хозяйство в Зелёных Мезонинах. Мэтью работает на ферме, а Марилла хлопочет по дому. И так бы прошло бессчетное множество зим и лет, пока Мэтью не надумывает взять на воспитание мальчика-сироту. Ему на ферме – помощь, да и сестре хоть какая-то отрада вечерами. Марилла не спорит с братом и, подумав, соглашается. И однажды весной Мэтью, нарядившись в свой лучший костюм, едет встречать пятичасовой из Шартлоттауна, немало озадачивая любопытных соседей. И представьте весь ужас и смятение Мэтью, когда на опустевшей станции вместо мальчика одиннадцати лет он видит рыжеволосую девочку со старомодным саквояжем. Но девочка такая непосредственная болтунья и милая фантазёрка, что старое сердце дрогнуло, и не смог Мэтью сказать здесь и сейчас, что это какая-то путаница и ошибка... Поэтому фермер везёт девочку в Зелёные Мезонины, и теперь удивляться предстоит Марилле.
