⚡ Be able to define both "intelligence" and "artificial intelligence."
⚡ Become acquainted with the major philosophical ideas behind AI development.
⚡ Be able to articulate the major philosophical issues being discussed within both the scientific and philosophical fields surrounding AI
Requirements
❗ No programming or prior philosophical knowledge needed. This course breaks down the prevailing philosophical mindset guiding AI development and presents it in an easily-understandable format for the everyday person.
Description
The field of artificial intelligence is seen and felt in the everyday life of many, yet it is so vast and complex a field that it is only understood by a few. While the complex programming and engineering knowledge needed for an insider's perspective into artificial intelligence is difficult to attain, a practical and philosophical understanding of artificial intelligence is not.
No background in either the scientific fields or philosophy is needed for this course. This course is meant to serve as an introduction and overview to the philosophy of artificial intelligence. Within this introduction and overview of the philosophy of artificial intelligence, we will bridge the complicated field of artificial intelligence to the understanding and concerns of the everyday person. Overall, we will break down the field of artificial intelligence so that it can be understood in down-to-earth terms.
While the field of artificial intelligence is vast, this course offers a comprehensive (yet still introductory) understanding of the field while additionally providing philosophical insight into the current state of the field. As such, the course is broken down into two main parts.Part 1 deals with breaking down the field of artificial intelligence to make it intelligible in practical terminology. At the end of the section, we will arrive at a functional definition for "artificial intelligence" as a whole.Part 2 deals with the philosophical implications of the understanding of artificial intelligence we arrive at in Part 1. These philosophical implications (while extensive) are summarized and presented in a universal way. Issues like "consciousness," "ethical implications of AI," and "human identity" are all covered in Part 2.
Overall, this course aims to introduce the average person to the field of artificial intelligence and the major philosophical issues surrounding the field. At the end of the course, you will be able to define artificial intelligence, give an account of the major scientific and philosophical forces driving the modern development of artificial intelligence, and articulate the major philosophical issues still being discussed within both the scientific and philosophical fields surrounding AI.
