The comparisons to Aretha Franklin are inevitable, but Juanita Williams' voice and passion are her own. Her debut, Introducing Juanita Williams, features a wide-rag sample of modern and classic blues tunes, everything from Ike and Tina Turner's "Crazy About You Baby" to Freddie King's "That Will Never Do" and Bobby Bland's "Two Steps from the Blues." Anybody who has doubts about the future of women blues vocalists should pick up Williams' impressive debut. ~Richard Skelly

Led by the irrepressible Eric Sheridan, a tall, striking bundle of energy whose musical tastes and shouting vocals reflect his idol Wynonie Harris, the Uptown Rhythm Kings have survived numerous personnel changes since their founding in the mid-1980s to remain one of the prr jump-blues bands in the mid-Atlantic region. With a four-piece horn section, their sound is a throwback to the honkers and shouters of the late 40s-early 50s, when big band jazz gave birth to rhythm & blues. Bands from that era, however, used to vary the pace, cooling down the crowd with slow ballads. These are absent from the playbook of the Uptown Rhythm Kings; they might aptly be termed the Uptempo Rhythm Kings. This CD was recorded live in 1995 at a fancy but ill-fated nightclub Mick Fleetwood briefly operated in Alexandria, Viia, just across the Potomac from the Kings' Washington DC home base. ~Steve Hoffman
CD 3: Odetta - To Ella (1993)
01. Black Woman ( 3:10)
02. The Fox ( 2:44)
03. Suite: Ancestors 1 (27:55)
04. Ol' Lady Sally ( 1:03)
05. Amazing Grace ( 2:06)
Although To Ella is dedicated to Ella Fitzgerald (who died in 1996), it isn't actually a tribute to the influential jazz singer. Nor does it find Odetta moving into jazz territory. Rather, this excellent CD is an example of Odetta doing what she does best: acoustic, storytelling folk that is influenced by African-American spirituals as well as rural blues. Odetta had been recording for over 40 years when To Ella was recorded at the Kerrville Folk Festival in the late '90s, and the veteran folk artist sings with as much conviction as ever on such moving performances as "Black Woman," "Ol' Lady Sally," and "900 Miles" (which is part of a 27-minute suite that also includes "Red Clay Country," "Shenandoah," and several other songs). Those who have been following Odetta for decades will be glad to hear how well her voice has held up over the years -- without a doubt, her range was still as impressive as ever. ~Alex Henderson
