Tanks fail from the bottom. It is the one part you cannot see, cannot easily inspect, and cannot repair without taking the tank out of service and cutting the floor out.
Soil-side corrosion is the dominant failure mode for aboveground storage tanks, and it happens in a place no routine inspection reaches. Meanwhile overfill - a completely different failure mode - has produced some of the most destructive incidents in the industry's history. Buncefield was an overfill.
This course covers the three standards that address both problems, and it treats them as one discipline: keeping product inside the tank.
WHAT YOU WILL MASTER
Five sections cover the corrosion mechanisms that destroy tank bottoms, cathodic protection design to API 651, internal linings and coatings to API 652, overfill prevention to API 2350, and release prevention barriers and programme management.
You will size a cathodic protection system - galvanic and impressed current, anode selection, current demand and rectifier sizing. You will apply the minus 850 millivolt and 100 millivolt criteria and read a potential survey correctly. You will specify a lining that will actually survive immersion service, including the surface preparation that most lining failures trace back to. And you will build an API 2350 overfill prevention system from tank category through levels of concern to response time.
THE INSPECTION INTERVAL ARGUMENT
There is a direct commercial case here. API 653 internal inspection intervals depend heavily on what protection is in place. A qualifying cathodic protection system, a qualifying lining, or a release prevention barrier can each extend the interval substantially - and a tank that stays in service is a tank that keeps earning. This course shows how the protection strategy and the inspection strategy are the same decision.
A CORPORATE COMPLIANCE SUBJECT
Overfill prevention and release prevention are not optional engineering preferences. They are regulated, audited, and personally consequential for duty holders. This is the knowledge that gets checked.
WHO THIS IS FOR
Corrosion, integrity and inspection engineers responsible for tank bottom life; terminal and operations engineers accountable for overfill prevention; HSE and compliance staff; API 653 holders who need the protection knowledge their certification assumes; and project engineers specifying protection systems on new tanks.
WHAT YOU GET
Structured on-demand video across 20 focused lessons and five sections, section quizzes and a final exam, lifetime access on mobile and TV, a certificate of completion, and Udemy's 30-day money-back guarantee.
No prior corrosion or cathodic protection knowledge is required - the electrochemistry is built from first principles for engineers, not chemists.
Enrol now and stop guessing at what is happening under your tanks.
