XRD, Rietveld Refinment, Quantitative Analysis, MAUD
What you'll learn
⚡ Import and validate experimental XRD data in MAUD
⚡ Build Instrument and Phase models using measurement information and CIF files
⚡ Refine background, phase scale, peak positions, and peak profiles step by step
⚡ Perform quantitative phase analysis and estimate amorphous content using an internal standard
⚡ Calibrate instrumental broadening and refine crystallite size and microstrain
⚡ Evaluate the fit, recognize unreliable parameters, and export the final results
Requirements
❗ No prior experience with MAUD is required.
❗ A basic understanding of X-ray diffraction (XRD), including concepts such as diffraction peaks, phases, and Bragg's law, is helpful but not mandatory.
❗ Learners should have access to a Windows computer capable of running MAUD. The software is free and installation will be covered in the course.
❗ Some familiarity with materials characterization or crystallography can be useful, but the course is designed to guide beginners step by step through the workflow.
Description
This course is a practical introduction toRietveld refinement of XRD data using MAUD.
Rather than going through every menu and parameter in the software, we will build an analysis step by step and focus on the settings that actually matter during a typical refinement.
We start by importing and checking an experimental XRD pattern, setting up the instrument, and adding crystal structures from CIF files. From there, we calculate the starting pattern and gradually refine the background, phase scale factors, peak positions, and peak profile.
Along the way, we will use thedifference curve and refinement output to understand what is improving, what is still wrong, and which part of the model should be checked next.
The course also coversmultiphase refinement, quantitative phase analysis, amorphous content using an internal standard, instrumental broadening, crystallite size, and microstrain.
Toward the end of the course, we will look at several real refinement examples with common problems. These are not polished "perfect fit" demonstrations. The goal is to learn how to look at an XRD pattern, recognize what may be going wrong, and make better decisions during refinement.
This course is aimed at students, researchers, and engineers who already have some basic familiarity with XRD and want a practical way to start using MAUD for Rietveld analysis without getting lost in every advanced option available in the software.
Who this course is for
⭐ This course is designed for students and researchers who use XRD in their work and want to learn how to perform reliable Rietveld refinement, quantitative phase analysis, and microstructural analysis through a practical, step-by-step workflow.
