Cupid and Psyche is a famous embedded narrative from the ancient Roman novel Metamorphoses (commonly known as The Golden Ass), written by the Platonist philosopher Apuleius. The story follows the exceptionally beautiful mortal princess Psyche, who inadvertently incurs the jealousy of Venus, the goddess of love. Venus dispatches her son Cupid (Eros) to make Psyche fall in love with a hideous monster, but Cupid accidentally scratches himself with his own arrow and falls deeply in love with her instead. He spirits her away to a secluded, magical palace, visiting her only in the dark of night under a strict condition: she must never look upon his face.
When Psyche breaks this vow, driven by the malicious prodding of her envious sisters, Cupid flees in betrayal. To win back her lost love, Psyche must wander the earth and complete a series of seemingly impossible, perilous trials imposed by a vengeful Venus-including a descent into the Underworld itself. Ultimately, her perseverance wins the favor of the gods, leading to her transformation into an immortal and her eternal union with Cupid. The tale is widely celebrated both as a timeless romance and as a profound Neoplatonic allegory detailing the human soul's (Psyche) journey through suffering toward divine love.
