English | 2024 | University of Pennsylvania Press | ISBN: 978-1-5128-2574-9 | 288 pages | EPUB | 14 MB

This historical study offers a new interpretation of Spanish colonial rule in the Philippine islands during the early modern era. Drawing on rich archival research, the text reveals how the ever-present threat of piracy-from Chinese corsairs, Dutch privateers, and Moro raiders-ironically helped forge and solidify alliances between Spanish colonial officials, Catholic missionaries, and the diverse indigenous and migrant populations of the archipelago. The book demonstrates how the shared necessity of maritime defense and counter-piracy operations shaped the political, social, and economic architecture of the Spanish Pacific world.
