The sequel to Moochin' About's stunning 2013 release (that focused mostly on the French New Wave), The New Wave II takes a more global perspective on the range of cinematic 'New Waves' that sprang up in the 1950s and through the 1960s. Despite the different national contexts of Britain, France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Argentina, and the United States, these independent, youth-centred film movements all embraced jazz soundtracks as part of their involvement with social and cultural change.
The musicians and composers featured in this set worked with some of the biggest names in independent, studio and 'New Wave' cinema of the 1950s and 1960s: Jean-Luc Godard, Michaelangelo Antonioni, Joseph Losey, John Cassavettes, Claude Chabrol, Robert Rossen, Agnes Varda, Karel Reisz, Basil Dearden, and Roger Vadim.
The collection offers a who's who of contemporary jazz musicians and composers, revealing the importance of their work to some of the defining 'New Wave' films, as well as related studio productions: Johnny Dankworth, Dave Brubeck, Charlie Mingus and others improvise music for All Night Long; Michel Legrand's scores for Eve, La Baie des Anges, Cleo de 5 a 7, Les Sept Peches Capitaux and Une F Est Une F reveal the central role his music played for the French nouvelle vague; jazz scores from legendary Italian composer Mario Nascimbene for Room at the Top and Morte di un Amico; Nowhere to Go, the only film soundtrack by Dizzy Reece; and Dankworth again, with the celebrated scores for We Are the Lambeth Boys, Saturday Night and Sunday Morning and The Criminal (also featuring Cleo Laine).
Criss-crossing the Atlantic, the set also showcases other musicians and composers: Donald Byrd, Barney Wilen and Jimmy Gourley perfog in the rare soundtrack to the unreleased Jazz in Camera, (used with kind permission by Patrick Wilen and filmmaker Sandro Bocola); Gourley again, contributing to the enchanting Château en Suède with Hubert Rostaing and composer Raymond Sénéchal; Benny Carter, Larry Bunker, Jimmy Rowles and Milt Bernhart on David Raksin's dynamic score for Too Late Blues; Joe Newman, Doc Severinsen, Clark Terry and Mundell "Munday" Lowe in Lowe's Satan in High Heels soundtrack; pianist George Gruntz' first soundtrack, for Seelische Grausamkeit; and scores by Paul Mizraki (Le Doulos), Martial Solal (Deus Hommes dans Manhattan), Alain Goraguer (J'rai cracher su vos tombes), Kenyon Hopkins (The Hustler), David Raksin (Too Late Blues), Eddy Manson (The Little Fugitive), Allesandro Brugnolini (Gli Arcangeli), Giorgio Gaslini (La Notte) and Sergio Mihanovich (Los Jovenes Viejos).
Gathered together by series creator Jason Lee Lazell, this is an epic 8CD deluxe version of some of the greatest and most influential jazz scores of the period, and some unsung and undiscovered scores that deserve more attention. These soundtracks cover a spectrum of 1950s and 1960s jazz material, from some of the most skilled musicians of the , and are presented here in the high quality digital remastered versions you would expect from Moochin' About. The set is accompanied by a full colour 106 page booklet, with sleeve notes by film historian Keith M. Johnston that places these soundtracks and composers in their historical context.
Foreword to this release has been written by British film director Mike Leigh OBE, who's films include, Life is Sweet, Naked, Career Girls, Topsy-Turvy, Vera Drake and Mr Turner.
